A report summarized views from two experts in the field of charitable giving. One argued that charities might be able to tap into new and different sources of funds if they could understand how people rationalized ?not giving? to their particular cause. The other said that charities could seek either compliance or compassion from their donors - on the whole these were mutually exclusive.

The Big Lottery Fund announced the first wave of funding for the period 2005 2009. It included programmes for voluntary and community sector infrastructure ( 155 million), children's play ( 155 million), environmental programmes ( 354 million), and 'wellbeing' programmes promoting healthier lifestyles ( 165 million).
